Perks of the Job

The Four Seasons Hotel. Perfectly seared Kobe Rib Eye, mashed potatoes, ratatouille. Not pictured: a glass of Flowers Pinot Noir, the greatest wine that the author, an admitted wine novice, has ever tasted.

Also not captured via camera: The awkward moment where the waitress sets the cork of the wine bottle in front of me to sniff. Valuing my blue collar roots over trying to keep up an air of pretention (and quite honestly, not knowing what she was doing), there was a solid 10 second awkward pause before I kind of mumbled, 'um, you can keep that'.

Don't worry. You weren't supposed to sniff the cork only inspect it. Sniffing it is considered gauche according to people who understand these things. I only remember that because when someone said it to me I had to look up what "gauche" meant. So sniffing it would have been much worse. You could have just gone for the gold though and tried to stuff the thing in one of your nostrils. If you managed to make it fit you could have then asked the waitress if she could get you another one for the other nostril.

Nice. Don't ever forget your roots. It takes a big man to admit that he drinks wine. Pretty courageous. Way to come strong. Nice. Great take.

Ben, I think you look at it to make sure it's moist, not dry, brittle, or breaking in any way (such as if the cork was breaking in the middle) or if the bottle opener punctured the bottom of the cork. . . then there could be a problem of having cork bits in your wine, or having nasty wine if the bottle wasn't stored upright and the cork became dry--yucky!
